JUNE 2004

The PIM Membership Committee was established at the 2002 PIM conference to set criteria for guest school selection, design the membership approval process and establish regional balance and PIM size guidelines. As we agreed last year in Mexico City, PIM will also initiate an annual membership report system to collect and maintain exchange data and compile international education activities from each member school.

ANNUAL MEMBERSHIP SURVEY 2004

Each PIM member school is required to complete the 2004 membership survey. This enables the organization to identify where our consortium has been most effective and where it requires attention to maximize its potential. This body of knowledge about our members' activities will create a new database of exchange numbers, trends in exchanges and other activities. It will also help us to identify best practices, highlight specific challenges faced by member schools and present a macro view of the numbers of students our network is impacting.

We thank Cathy Cashion, NYU-Stern, of the membership committee, who has taken the lead in developing this web-based survey tool that will enable the committee to collect data from each school. This data will be analyzed, synthesized and summarized for you by the Hong Kong meeting. Afterwards, it will also reside permanently on this site as a database of statistics for all of us to employ in our daily work.

We emphasize that your cooperation in completing this survey in a timely manner is critical to the development of PIM. Each PIM partner school is required to supply the consortium with its data by August 31st.

Once you have all your exchange numbers compiled for the Sept. 1, 2003 - Aug. 31, 2004 academic year (or your dates that most closely correspond), you will be prepared to complete the survey. Plan to allocate at least 30-40 minutes to its completion. Please keep in mind that the compendium of results will be published on-line and in a report to the full membership and your answers may be publicized, whole or in part.

If you do not have the email with the survey link, please contact Sonia Giudici for a protected, members only link to the online survey.

For any questions about this survey, please contact Robin Jensen, Chair of the Membership Committee.

2003 MEMBERSHIP COMMITTEE HIGHLIGHTS

PIM members responded to the 2003 Committee survey on these critical membership issues last year. Your responses were the foundation for numerous discussions and the development of the committee's key recommendations for changes. The committee strived to make PIM procedures more transparent and the network more flexible. At the same time, special emphasis was placed upon innovation in international student exchange.

  • Review the committee's report, which was discussed in depth at the Annual Meeting.
  • The resulting, revised Guidelines for Membership, which were agreed upon among members at the Annual Meeting.
  • Membership Committee's presentation, led by Barbara Sporn, with amendments agreed to by PIM membership.

The PIM Strategic Planning Committee was also established in 2002 to discuss the key short- and long-term strategic issues facing the PIM Organization and recommend current and future actions. The Committee is charged with advancing the PIM Mission and recommending ways to better utilize the enormous potential of the PIM Consortium.
